If you’re moving from Burr Ridge and first need to clear your house of extraneous clutter, use a dumpster to make the process easier. If you’re clearing your home of junk, heed these tips before moving, to cut down on your overall costs.

1.    Not Everything Goes into the Dumpster

It’s important to know what can and cannot go into your dumpster rental. Your dumpster rental company will be able to tell you what you’re allowed to put in there. For example, you can’t put any type of hazardous materials in there, such as wet paint, tires, batteries, oil, asbestos, sealed tanks/drums, electronics, tires and some types of furniture. Ask for a list from your rental company beforehand to avoid problems later.

2.    Consider Location

Where you put your dumpster is crucial. Make sure the ground underneath is level and strong enough to support the dumpster’s weight. Make sure the driveway is clear with no obstructions. Leave extra space around and above the dumpster to allow for plenty of clearance from walls, trees and power lines.

3.    Clean the Area

Making sure the area surrounding the dumpster is clean will ensure the area is free from potential hazards. You don’t want anyone tripping or slipping as they load the dumpster.

4.    Use Protective Gear

Don sturdy boots, gloves, helmets (in commercial settings) and durable clothing when putting items into your dumpster. This will keep you safe as well as prevent contamination, minor injuries and infection. Do not smoke near dumpsters because they may contain flammable waste such as paper and furniture.

5.    Inspect the Dumpster Before Use

Before using, give the dumpster a once-over after it is delivered. Make sure it is in the specified condition and that there are no broken hinges, rusted parts or loose doors. There should be proper labeling and cautionary signs on clear display, too.

6.    Keep Kids Away

Keep kids away from the dumpster. Kids are naturally curious and adventurous, and most certainly will try to hop in there. Explain the dangers that are associated with playing around a dumpster and make sure they understand they are not to go anywhere near it. Don’t place the dumpster near children’s play areas, as an extra precaution.
